Sean
Griffin, a sophomore at Rutgers University has taken his Eagle Scout experience
and used it to become a student leader at the university.
In
particular Griffin is a leader with WRSU. WRSU is the official student radio
station of Rutgers University.
Last
year Griffin became a member of the WRSU sports department. The WRSU sports department broadcasts and
produces Rutgers sporting events.
As well as being a part of WRSU, Griffin is a resident
assistant on Cook Campus. On average he
spends six to ten hours a week working the position.
Griffin
on balancing resident assistant duties with schoolwork: “At some points it can
be a little bit challenging especially when I am on duty but I do tend to work
around my schedule for duties and try to schedule times for studying”.
Throughout his life Griffin has always managed to excel
academically and become involved in many organizations.
At
Montgomery Township High School, Griffin was an Eagle Scout and a student coach
for the basketball team.
Griffin
is no stranger to hard work considering he spent 180 hours on his Eagle Scout
project. In his project he was in charge
of a toiletry drive for temporarily displaced children.
Griffin
on becoming an Eagle Scout: “Becoming an Eagle Scout is my biggest
accomplishment to date. To join such a selective group of only 4% of other
Eagle Scouts nationwide is a great achievement”.
Griffin
thinks that being an Eagle Scout will look good on a resume. “There’s a lot of transferable skills that I
learned and applied while carrying out my project. Hopefully that will appeal
to whichever job I’m going for in the future”.
From
his Eagle Scout project Griffin says that he learned how to overcome obstacles
and not let it deter him from his ultimate goal. Initially his goal was not
well received nor supported so he had to figure out alternate ways to gain the
support of his leaders.
The
Eagle Scout project also helped Griffin learn leadership goals such as: how to
lead by example and how to motivate people to help contribute to his project. Griffin
says that he also learned organizational management skills and interpersonal
communication skills.
Griffin
is a sophomore majoring in journalism and media studies and sports management. Griffin has been a sports fan since he was
around eight or nine years old.
Every
morning Griffin would read the sports column in The Star Ledger before school started.
In the future Griffin hopes to become a sportswriter or a
sports broadcaster for ESPN or Fox Sports.
Next summer Griffin is hoping to get an internship for a minor league baseball team. A few friends of his from the WRSU radio station worked internships with minor league teams this past summer which caught Griffin’s attention.
Griffin says he has always been a big fan of baseball and
feels that there are a lot of local teams that could hopefully provide some
valuable experience. He is looking to
find this internship to get his foot in the door for future job opportunities.
Griffin’s resume will be filled with many leadership
positions. He is an Eagle Scout, a
resident assistant, and is a part of Rutgers Radio station.
As far as future job locations go, Griffin is willing to
travel to wherever jobs are hiring. Griffin
states, “I would like to live in New Jersey, but I may have to move to where
they are hiring”.
Griffin has proven that he can be heavily involved in
clubs and activities and maintain his academic workload. He is looking forward to seeing where his
skills will take him.
