Bop to The Top: A Look At Which Organizations Raised The Most RU Dance Marathon Money

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., April 29th, 2019. — There are many charitable events that take place at Rutgers University, but sororities and fraternities have figured out a way to make dancing rake in the dough.

Running from April 5th to the 6th, the annual RU Dance Marathon raised $1,120,205.48 for the Embrace Kids Foundation thanks to the combined efforts of various student organizations.

According to The Daily Targum, 1,873 dancers took part in the event. With this many participants, it begs the question; Who raised the most money?

The answer to that question who the top three money raisers, thanks to data courtesy of The Daily Targum and the Embrace Kids Foundation, lies below.

3. Alpha Phi Omega
Alpha Phi Omega is one of the largest co-ed community service and professional fraternities on campus. Using their large outreach network and various fundraising events like bake sales, the organization managed to raise $50,833.

Ishita Kundu, a sophomore studying Human Resource Management, is not a member of Alpha Phi Omega and did not participate in the RU Dance Marathon. One of her friends, however, is an active member, so she donated money for the cause.

“I think it’s a good thing that they are doing,” she says. “I’m super proud of my friend, and am happy to support her. To see that all the hard work she and the others in the organization did paid off is awesome.”

2. Chi Psi
One of the oldest fraternities on campus, Chi Psi has always played an important role in the Rutgers community and makes each of their brothers do a minimum of five hours community service each semester to remain a member. Though not everyone danced in the marathon, with $64,955 raised, it's clear that many brothers contributed.

Erin Bogert, a junior theater major, wanted to get involved in the Rutgers Dance Marathon but was too confused by the process of starting or joining a team. Still, she is very happy with the members of Chi Psi. She says, “I think it's great that Rutgers provides their student organizations the ability to give back to the broader community. The brothers of Chi Psi  deserve a lot of praise. $64,955 is nothing to sneeze at. “

  1. Phi Sigma Sigma
Coming in at number one, the sorority Phi Sigma Sigma managed to rake in a whopping $65,648. While they did not reach their personal goal of $80,000, they did raise more than any of the other organizations on campus. On their fundraising page, they state that they did it for four girls in need of treatment.

Celine Labelle, a junior public health major, is not involved in the sorority or any of its workings. However, she greatly respects their work. She says, “As a Douglass woman, I support women helping women in any capacity. I did relay for life in high school, and people who were involved had lost someone to cancer. It makes it much more real when you have a face to the name.”
