A staple of Rutgers University, the
Dance Marathon charity event has helped hundreds of kids with the Embrace Kids
Foundation. Dozens of clubs, fraternities, and sororities banded together to raise
money with many of them going above and beyond to collect any donation they could.

In yet another record-breaking year,
the event collected $1,120,205.48, topping last year’s total of $1,055,468.37. Students
worked diligently for weeks fundraising and asking friends and family for
donations and got to see their hard work pay off at the end of the night.

Gamma Phi Beta came in fourth place
and raised $44,350. Most members were happy with their total but some felt that
it was not enough.
“We didn’t table as much as I would like to have and some donations fell through,” said fraternity brother Chris Ramirez. He
ended by saying that although he wished he did more, at least they contributed
to a good cause.
Fraternity Alpha Phi Omega placed
third, contributing $50,833 to the overall total. Members were thrilled that
they contribute and as freshman Timmy Sambeski said “couldn’t wait to do it all
again next year”.
It
was a close call between the top two groups but in the end, Chi Psi came up
just short of the number one spot.
Phi
Sigma Sigma raised the most money with a massive total of $65,628 while Chi Psi
came in second with a rousing total of $64,955.
Chi
Psi brother Brad Lo Prinzi said that while some friendly competition between the
two fraternities was nice, it was all for the kids.
“Obviously,
we wanted to come out on top but we still donated a whole lot more than other
groups for a good cause,” Brad said.
With
the biggest total of this year’s event, Phi Sigma Sigma member Matt Matteo
thanked everyone in his fraternity that participated and helped reach this goal.
Even
those working the event were surprised and thrilled to see the final amount.
Rutgers
Student and Dance Marathon organizer Alyssa Rivers worked the event and was ecstatic
to see the total amount raised. “It’s always fun running these events and to be
a part of something so historic is just amazing!” she said with a smile.
Like
previous years, the top groups were comprised primarily of fraternities or sororities.
Psi Psi member Andre Sajnoski said it’s because they are so well connected that
donations are much easier to come by.
“We
know so many people and have the network to reach out that it’s not really a
shock to anyone” he said.
With another successful year
finished, students will just have to wait until next year to try and earn one
of those prestigious top spots.
