Dennis Miller Profile

By Jay Cook
Working towards a journalism degree from Rutgers University, set to graduate in the spring semester in 2016, East Keansburg native Dennis Miller is making strides towards his ultimate goal of covering professional sports as a radio host.

Miller’s dream job, hosting his own sports talk radio show in the New York market, stems from a lifelong love of sports, starting at a young age. “When I was growing up, I found myself either turning down the TV broadcasts or just talking over the announcers, calling the games on my own with my own style,” he said.

Despite making his own calls over these game casters, Miller has his fair share of favorites. “Of course Al Michaels is on the list, he is an all-time great. Other than him, I enjoy Gary Cohen, Mike Breen, Joe Buck and Jon Gruden,” he said.

His love for the radio and writing have converted into his active involvement at Brookdale Community College, both with the student radio club and as a staff member for the school paper, The Stall.

With The Stall, Miller is in his third year as a writer on the staff, covering numerous topics. He revolves his writing around professional sports, current politics and also had a weekly column highlighting odd college happenings around the country.

He also is an active member with Brookdale Student Radio, as he has either hosted or co-hosted numerous shows in his career there. Over this past summer, his own personal show, which is fittingly titled “Miller” came to fruition, which covers almost all major professional sports. He provides unbiased commentary on the weekly hour long show, which is on air each Tuesday at 9 A.M.

His other show during the fall of 2015 semester immediately follows “Miller,” which is titled “The Gridiron Gang.” This hour long show provides weekly coverage of the National Football League. Game by game predictions, breakdowns of local games and an in-depth look at the fantasy football world can all be found here. This show is also co-hosted with two of Miller’s peers, Jay Cook and Louis Denza.

Miller is an avid listener of sports radio, tuning into multiple stations on a daily basis. “For my favorite radio talk show guys, they would be Dave Rothenberg, Colin Cowherd, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, Stephen A. Smith and Don La Greca,” he said.

Shifting through the subject of favorite radio personalities came favorite professional teams. The New York Yankees rank at the top of the list of Miller’s favorite teams in professional sports, as he is a true baseball guy. Besides baseball, he also enjoys soccer, basketball and football, where he is a diehard fan.

During basketball season, it would not be out of the ordinary to catch Miller representing the iconic blue and orange New York Knicks jersey he frequents after a Knicks victory. With professional soccer, he cheers for a new expansion team to the area. “NYCFC is my team, because even though they are new to the MLS, my favorite player of all-time, Frank Lampard from Chelsea came over from England to play with them,” Miller said.

In the world of professional football is where Miller strays away from the regular favorites of his local area, such as the New York Jets or the New York Giants. As a matter of fact, he roots furiously for a Giants rival; the Dallas Cowboys. Hesitate before calling him a band-wagoner though, as this love for the Cowboys came at a young age, from a family member who also roots for the Cowboys.

Along with his love for sports, Miller is an active reader. His father is a history teacher at Matawan High School, so a majority of his favorite reading materials originate from this area. Besides that, he frequently delves into more in-depth and challenging readings from worldly philosophers. While he reads many, one of his favorites whom he connects with, is Frenchman Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Miller’s unique and unprejudiced look at the world of professional sports gives him a leg up as his career is only beginning in the sports media world. Keep an ear open for Miller, as his career as a sports radio host in about to be in full focus.
