Masiel Torres, of New Brunswick has accomplished more in her first two years at Rutgers than some professionals have in years.

By 20 years old, Torres has started working for “I.Am.Rutgers,” RU-TV, and has just landed a prized internship with Telemundo.

Telemundo is a Spanish language broadcast station that is owned by NBCUniversal here in the United States. The program features news, sports, weather, and reality T.V. shows.
At Telemundo, Torres works for the Creative Department focusing on promotional material. She also works on a live entertainment program called “Acceso Total.” Torres assists with production, working the teleprompter or with the graphics department. Torres is expanding her skill set and demonstrating her ability to perform several tasks.

Torres also spends her time writing for “I.am.Rutgers,” an online news website that focuses on RU students and RU life. “At I.Am.Rutgers we try to highlight the student experience on and off campus” Torres said.

She specifically writes student spotlights, articles on campus organizations, and advice for incoming freshman.

Torres wasn’t always a prospective journalist. Back when she attended a Rutgers Educational camp in her childhood summers, she planned on becoming a businesswoman.

Torres is now a junior at Rutgers University and is working towards a Bachelors of Journalism and Media Studies with a minor in Hispanic/Caribbean Studies.

The bilingual writer and reporter has started working at RU-TV, a popular independent television network broadcasted by the University.

At RU-TV, Torres works as an assistant operator, which means she spends most of her time scheduling the content for the channels. This job has introduced her to new software programs such as Hypercaster and Timeliner.

When she is writing she especially loves topics that include the minority population on campus, whether it’s commuters, the Latino community, or the African American community.

Torres believes that journalism and media should bring people together. The reason why she wants to be in the news is because she wants to “bring back the full story.” Torres’s goal is to make justifiable news: news that defies the typical headliner story.

In order to be a successful journalist or media head, Torres believes she must be “ethical, honest, persistent, and hard-working.” Torres is ready to report the truth without allowing prejudice or bias affect her work.
